Dinnerlady serves up double helping of comedy

'Four slices of white with low fat spread'. Hardly the most obvious catchphrase, but for Dinnerladies actress Sue Devaney, it's a phrase that follows her wherever she goes! Sue starred in the hugely successful BBC television series of Dinnerladies, penned by and co-starring Victoria Wood, and this week, plays the same lovable character 'Jane' in the stage show, live at the Grand Opera House.

The stage adaptation has been sweeping theatres all over the UK for the past number of months to rave reviews, and brings to life the 'will they/won't they' love story between Bren and Tony.

"The show has been very well received," enthused Jane. "I particularly like doing the show in the North of England, as I think they really get the humour and the accents! But I am really looking forward to coming to Belfast, as it's a place I have never been before."

She explained: "The stage adaptation takes place over a six month period and really focuses on the second series of Dinnerladies, and the love story between Bren and Tony. It's all Victoria Wood's words so it's exactly the same humour as the TV show."

Sue was delighted when her character Jane became a more familiar figure as the television series progressed: "I was always just popping in and out, ordering me white sliced with low-fat spread. As the show went on my character became more involved and became more outrageous! She's great fun to play."

Despite being known for her television appearances in shows such as Dinnerladies, Coronation Street and as a young actress in the hugely popular children's series Johnny Briggs, Jane is no stranger to the stage: "I also do stand up comedy and have a singing comedy duo called Double Bubble!" she said. "I am also writing my own comedy series which I would love to see commissioned. I really enjoy being able to do a bit of everything but I have to say I love being on the road. Living out of a suitcase suits me and that instant response you get from a live audience particularly with a comedy, is the best."

Sue stars in Dinnerladies all this week at the Grand Opera House. Limited tickets are available to book call the box office on 02890 241919 or log onto www.goh.co.uk
